The photographs in this album include candid shots of school activities and outings at the Cumming School of Art; a home economics class at Casady School in Des Moines; the Iowa State Fair; a Zetamathean Society dinner; and dramatic reenactments by Lenore Heefner and her classmates. Some of the students in the photographs who later achieved at least regional recognition as artists are: Gerard Rayness, Velma (Wallace) Rayness, Alice (McKee) Cumming, Omer Gray, Dorothea (Tomlinson) Marquis, and Harold Dow Bugbee.

Heefner was a Des Moines resident who attended the Cumming School of Art in Des Moines ca. 1916-1921 when the school was located on the top floor of the Des Moines Public Library. Charles Atherton Cumming was born in Knox County, Iowa to George Paxton Cumming and Eliza Atherton. He studied art at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the Acad́émie Julien in Paris, France. He was an artist and an educator and held an early faculty position in the Department of Art at Cornell University. He founded the Cumming School of Art in Des Moines, Iowa in 1895.
